Kindness is Trending

Kindness begins with the understanding that we all struggle
— Charles Glassman

We just finished celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week between 14 and 21 February, and it has been so moving to see communities going above and beyond. As we are now in the first few days of Ramadan, this spirit of reflection and giving feels even more present in our lives. It is such a beautiful reminder that empathy is the most powerful tool we have for finding peace and connection.

On a more personal note, I experienced kindness myself this week. I have been quite open about struggling a bit recently with the transition of moving to a new country and gaining employment. It is a massive life change and it is perfectly okay to feel the weight of that shift. Wonderful people from my MENA (Middle East Career Accelerator) community reached out to check on me because they knew I was finding it tough. That simple act of being seen and supported reminded me that even when we are in a new place, we are never alone.

A Few Things I Read in the News That Made Me Smile

  • The Potato Rescue: Sustainability and compassion came together in such a wonderful way this week in Germany. After a record harvest, local farmers organised a massive giveaway of free potatoes across Berlin. Instead of allowing the surplus to go to waste, they ensured that soup kitchens, schools, and the city zoo were fully stocked. It is a simple but profound example of how sharing what we have can nourish an entire community.

  • Prison Pups and the Power of Care: There is also incredible news from a unique training programme where incarcerated individuals help prepare guide dogs for their future roles. Reports this week show that these pups have a 10% higher success rate than those in traditional training. This tells us that time and genuine care are the most important ingredients for growth. By creating a non-judgemental space for both the trainers and the dogs, the programme proves that we all have the capacity to contribute something meaningful when given the right support.

A Moment for Reflection

As we head into the weekend, I invite you to think about the small acts of kindness you have seen or felt lately. Whether you are observing the holy month or simply enjoying the quiet moments of the season, these connections are exactly what help us build a more rewarding and secure future for everyone.
