We’ve all been there: lying awake at 2:00 am replaying a conversation from years ago, or staring at a blank screen convinced we need just one more bit of research before we can start. Overthinking feels like problem-solving, but it’s actually just worrying. It leaves us exhausted, overwhelmed, and stationary. As James Clear recently reminded me, claiming you need to learn more is often just a crutch. We use gathering information as a shield against the vulnerability of doing.

The Mind-Body Connection

Health is holistic. The idea that physical and mental health are separate is outdated; the mind and body are parts of one system. When one goes off, the others follow. Your gut, heart, and liver are constantly communicating with your brain. Our bodies are coded for activity. Many of our modern mental struggles result from forgetting the basics: moving, eating, and sleeping.

4 Pillars of a Calm Life

To protect my peace in a new country, I’ve stopped trying to think my way out of stress. Instead, I focus on these four daily pillars:

1. Movement as Medicine Physical activity

Even just 30 minutes a day is often as effective as medication for treating anxiety and depression. Exercise releases happy chemicals:

Serotonin: Stabilizes mood and promotes happiness.

Norepinephrine: Helps the body respond to stress and focus.

Dopamine: Drives feelings of reward and motivation. I

2. Prioritise Rest Poor

Sleep impacts every part of your brain. Without 7–8 hours, your body cannot restore or recuperate. If you want to stop overthinking, you have to give your brain the offline time it needs to clear out the mental clutter.

3. Nutrition and the Gut

We are what we eat. Inflammation in the gut can manifest as symptoms of anxiety and depression. When stressed, we tend to over- or under-eat, but your body needs fuel to handle the mental load.

4. The Power of Breath

Seventy percent of our toxins are released simply by breathing properly. Most of us breathe too shallowly, which tricks the brain into a state of distress.

Try this: Inhale for a count of 4, then exhale for a count of 8. The longer exhale signals to your nervous system that you are safe.

In this high-tech world, I’ve found peace by moving in two opposite directions. I write my first drafts by hand, no screens, no distractions.

Then, I go all in on AI to transcribe and edit. This allows me to slow down to think and speed up to execute.

There is no logic in suffering in silence. Being at peace is not having no problems; it’s the ability to deal with whatever life throws at you. Take a deep breath.
