Find Your Calm

You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.

At the time of writing this blog the hail is battering the windows. A day that started bathed in sunshine has gone rogue!

To be honest, the world feels like an unpredictable place at the moment, and attending weekly yoga classes and committing to a regular yoga practice can be the anchor to help us deal with all the uncertainty.

Richard Carlson’s timeless classic, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... and It's All Small Stuff, suggests that we are frequently caught in a cycle of overreacting to life’s inevitable inconveniences. By learning to distinguish between what truly matters and what is merely a temporary annoyance, we can reclaim our peace of mind.

At the heart of the book is the idea that our stress is often self-inflicted. We tend to grant minor issues far more importance than they deserve. When you feel your blood pressure rising over a small problem, try asking yourself: Will this matter in a year? Usually, the answer is no. This can instantly lower your stress levels.

Practical Steps to Peace

Here are three fundamental habits:

Make Peace with Imperfection: Understand that your to-do list will never be finished. Accepting that life is a continuous stream of tasks allows you to stop feeling guilty for being human.

Choose Your Battles: Not every annoyance requires a response. By letting go of the need to be right or the need to control every situation, you save your emotional energy for the relationships and goals that bring you joy.

Live in the Present: Most of our anxiety is rooted in the past or the future. By focusing on the present moment, you can detach from the narrative of what went wrong or what might go wrong, finding stillness in the now.

Carlson reminds us that life is not a race to a finish line, but a series of moments to be navigated. When you find yourself getting worked up, remember: you have the power to pause, take a deep breath, and choose a different reaction. I have found that yoga gives me the sure foundation to withstand the winds of change. Committing to a yoga class or practice allows you to face your fears, build up resilience and learn how to soothe your nervous system.

You don't have to be perfect, and you certainly don't have to sweat the small stuff. After all, when you look at the grand scope of your life, almost everything is small stuff.

Are you currently working on letting go of a specific stressor, or are you looking for more ways to cultivate mindfulness in your daily routine?
