Creating moments that matter at Expo City

“When you place people at the heart of any experience, the magic follows naturally.”
— Maya Angelou

I walked through Expo City Dubai for the very first time today. I expected grand architecture and massive event spaces. I did not expect how deeply human and alive it feels the moment you arrive.

As an event organiser, I look at venues through the lens of genuine connection. We spend so much time worrying about logistics and floor plans. Today reminded me that the atmosphere of a venue does half the work for us. As Daniel Libeskind once said, architecture is about housing hope. When a venue is built around people, guests feel comfortable right away.

A living space

Walking through the car-free avenues, the first thing I noticed was the quiet presence of nature. You can hear local birds singing in the Ghaf trees and see bees buzzing around the flowering native plants.

The site includes Jane Goodall’s Pollinator Garden near the Terra Pavilion, which shelters thousands of native UAE bees. It brings a gentle, grounding energy to a place built on such a large scale.

Designed around people

Large venues often feel cold or industrial. Expo City avoids this by breaking its layout into warm, walkable districts that feel welcoming.

  • Al Wasl Plaza: The central dome provides a natural gathering spot. The built-in 360-degree projection system lets you create clear visuals without needing temporary rigging.

  • Terra and Alif: These pavilions offer quiet, green settings surrounded by native plant life, ideal for evening drinks or breakout sessions.

  • Jubilee and Al Forsan Parks: Open lawns framed by greenery work well for community gatherings or casual networking.

Practical benefits for organisers

Seeing the site in person makes the operational benefits clear.

  • Integrated tech: High-end sound, lighting, and screens are built directly into the main spaces. This saves setup time and production effort.

  • Direct transit: The site connects directly to the Dubai Metro, making delegate arrivals simple and stress-free.

  • Real sustainability: Venues like Terra operate on net-zero principles. You can host an environmentally responsible gathering without adding extra operational steps.

Hosting thoughts from my first visit

If you are planning an event here, a few initial observations stand out:

  1. Start small, then expand: Use shaded garden nooks for arrivals before moving guests to the larger plazas.

  2. Embrace the walk: The site is vast and pedestrianised. Build in extra travel time so delegates can enjoy the walk between sessions.

  3. Work with the light: Plan outdoor gatherings for late afternoon to catch the breeze as the sun sets behind Al Wasl Dome.

Standing here, it is easy to see why this site was chosen for huge global gatherings. It hosted Expo 2020 Dubai, welcoming millions of visitors from across the world. It was also the home of COP28, where world leaders gathered to focus on climate action. The Dubai Exhibition Centre right on site continues to host major international trade shows and global industry summits year-round. Expo City gives you a practical space where people feel comfortable and connected from the second they arrive.
