91 Years Young: My Nan’s Secrets to Vitality
Last month, I was back in Cardiff to celebrate my nan’s 91st birthday. She is phenomenal! Kind, inspirational, and I love her dearly. Looking at her blowing out her candles, radiating energy and a timeless kind of beauty, I couldn’t help but wonder: Is it purely genetic, or are there longevity lessons we can learn from older role models living the lives we hope to live when we reach their age?
As we grow older, embracing wellness becomes such a beautiful way to protect both our health and our happiness. While good genes certainly play a part, science and experience show that our daily choices matter. We live in a world obsessed with skincare routines, expensive supplements, and tracking our every move. Yet, my nan has never once worn a device to track her steps or her sleep. She is living proof that true wellbeing comes from a much simpler, deeper place.
True happiness doesn’t depend on avoiding setbacks, failures, losses, or tragedies, anyone who is blessed enough to live to 80 or 90 will experience all of them. Instead, joy is entirely connected to your attitude. For me, learning from Nan means consciously deciding not to dwell on the past or worry about the future. It means staying rooted in the present moment and genuinely enjoying the time we have right now.
Nan’s life beautifully reflects what science constantly proves to be the true foundation of longevity. She has never needed a wellness app or a smartwatch to tell her to focus on the basics:
A Healthy Diet: She genuinely enjoys her food, embracing everything in moderation, including a sweet treat with her cuppa!
Regular Physical Activity: She has never set foot in a gym. Instead, she walks everywhere and has kept her body moving naturally, every single day.
Adequate Sleep Duration: She deeply respects her body's natural rhythms, ensuring she gets proper, restful sleep every night.
Never Smoking: Simply avoiding toxic habits has kept her lungs, heart, and skin incredibly vibrant through the decades.
Connection is the Ultimate Nutrient
Nan is deeply connected to her family and everyone around her. She listens with an open heart, she laughs fully, and she always checks in on others. Her profound love for people is exactly what keeps her spirit alive and kicking.
Emotional Resilience
Let's be honest, you don't reach 91 without facing hardships. But Nan stays so energetic because she refuses to carry heavy emotional baggage. She doesn’t hoard bitterness; she beautifully lets it go. Instead, she chooses gratitude and focuses all her love on the present moment.
Our lifestyle matters so much, and the wonderful thing is that it’s entirely within our control.
